How did you benefit from the trip?

“It has given me the opportunity to experience voluntary work at this school and that we made such a difference here.

The VoluntEars staff made us feel very welcome. It never felt like a dull day.

I was impressed that the children knew some BSL signs and understood the games we played together. They inspired me and appeared happy and positive!”

What did you like most about the trip?

“I knew this was a perfect opportunity. It was a balanced programme which was very informative.

It was great to mix with hearing people who had mastered their BSL signs and specialised in deaf awareness.”

Describe your experience in Sri Lanka

“Visiting the elephant orphanage – being so close to the elephants was amazing; I think one of the elephants even winked at me!

Volunteering at a turtle project was a real eye opener.

We celebrated Christmas on a beautiful beach – bliss.

The locals were very nice and friendly; it almost felt like I was at home. Our chef, Rani, cooked these amazing homemade dishes over 2 weeks, especially pineapple curry. She deserves a medal!”

What did VoluntEars do well?

“They provided the interpreter, a professional perfectly suited to the role.

Informative booklet – very insightful.

Pre-trip meeting – useful and met all volunteers.

Answering all queries well via WhatsApp.

Providing specialised support if needed, like when a volunteer needed medical aid.”

What was the most memorable experience?

“I had the privilege to work with a great team for 2 weeks. Also, we were extremely happy with the results with our renovation project for girls dormitory in a local Deaf school.”

What was the funniest thing?

“The group pranked me at one point – let’s just say that it was not a real rat…!”
